Community Collaborative

Collaborative History and Purpose

The Alger Heights Collaborative was formed in December of 2011 by Seymour CRC, Tabernacle Community Church, Alger Park CRC and The Branch.

The purpose of the collaborative is to focus, coordinate and resource asset based community development efforts in the neighborhood surrounding the Alger Heights area of Grand Rapids.

The general boundaries within which the collaborative will focus its efforts are:

  • Burton Street on the north
  • 28th Street on the south
  • Madison Street on the west
  • Kalamazoo Street on the east

The desired outcomes of the work are:

  • Neighborhoods within the boundaries becoming places of inclusion, wholeness, and hope for all constituents, through their own efforts
  • Better coordination by neighborhood organizations leading to less overlap of service and higher overall impact
  • Community development in the area being led by community residents and other stakeholders
  • Participating organizations themselves becoming more deeply engaged in transforming their local neighborhoods

The desired outcomes will be accomplished through:

  • Community walking and asset mapping exercises
  • Meeting neighbors to interview them about personal hopes and dreams for the neighborhood
  • Linking neighbors to another to address felt needs and linking neighbors to existing programs and services that can address felt needs
  • Coordinating residents around common themes of interest to bring about a collectively-desired outcome
  • Identifying neighbors who would be willing to commit their time and resources to community improvement projects
